BANNING TANNING BEDS

September 15, 2009 by makingfacesskincare

An overwhelming evidence suggests that chronic exposure to Tanning beds increases the chances of getting Melanoma, a deadly skin cancer  that affects people of every age.

“About one million people per day in the U.S. get their tan in Tanning Parlors.   People, including young people, die every day from Melanoma and there is strong evidence that exposure to UV radiation during  indoor tanning increases the risk of melanoma, expecially when that occurs at an early age.   Public support for laws that would make it  harder for teens to have access to tanning beds is very encouraging.  Such legislation would literally save lives”, said Steven E. Zimmet, MD of Zimmet Vein @ Dermatology, Austin, Texas and advisor to dermanetwork.org.

As a result, many states have enacted laws to stop the proliferation of teens seeking the tanning bed, or at least requiring a minor to have a parental consent in order to tan.  Other states have passed stiffer laws that require minors or those under 18 to have a written prescription from their doctors. These laws are needed to emphasize the danger of UV exposure by using the Tanning  bed.  (for more information please log on www.dermanetwork.org).

Sun Damage Prevention

July 11, 2009 by makingfacesskincare

“There is no getting around it, the sun damages and prematurely ages the skin”  – James E. Fulton MD, Ph.D.

With the skin cancer incidents rising every year, we woul like to give you some tips on how to protect your skin while you enjoy the Summer.

For sunscreen to be more effective, it should be applied at least an hour before sun exposure to let the ingredients fully activate, and then be reapplied every couple of hours during exposure.  As with all skin treatments, sunscreen’s active ingredients penetrate the skin more effectively when applied immediately following a bath or a shower, when skin is still moist.  The same principle applies to subsequent applications throughout the day.  Reapply when skin is still damp from swimming.  And remember, even waterproof sunscreens claiming to last throughout the day require frequent re-application, because waterproof doesn’t mean “towel-proof”.

Most people think that high SPF numbers will double or triple the more common 95% sun protection that SPF15 provides.  However, an SPF 50 blocks about 97% of these rays.  Therefore, increasing the SPF from 15 to 50  only gives 2% more sun protection, while exposing the skin to a much higher concentration of potentially irritating ingredients.  For a better coverage, remember to reapply on a regular basis while in the sun.

Avoid the sun between the peak hours of 11:00 am and 3:00 pm when rays are the strongest and wear protective hats and big sunglasses to avoid lines around eyes.  And, of course, hydrate yourself constantly!
